APPEAL FOR EMERGENCY RELIEF FUND FOR EARTHQUAKE VICTIMS IN AZAD KASHMIR
The earthquake struck early morning 8.50am on 8th October ‘05, wreaking havoc and destruction in its wake. Thousands have lost their lives and thousands more are injured. They have lost everything, their homes, their loved ones, and their means of livelihood. It is the worst tragedy to hit the subcontinent in over a century. According to the head of UN Disaster Coordination, the devastation is worse than that caused by the Southeast Asian tsunami. Winter had already approached and the nights were very cold with snow in many parts. The affectees were lying frightened under the open sky waiting, waiting for help.

MALC responded immediately by making emergency funds available at the shortest notice.
Our trusted donors and well-wishers showed equal concern, and also responded by following up the pledges, with disbursements within few days.
Both the local and international community once again proved that the entire humanity is one when disaster strikes in any corner of the world.

MALC has been co-sponsoring the Leprosy program in Azad Kashmir, since last forty years and the Tuberculosis program since 1975. From the 67 centres in this province, 35 were in the four affected districts, of which 77% were either beyond repairs or collapsed. The worst affected areas in Azad Kashmir are Muzaffarabad, Bagh, Rawlakot and Neelum. The centres in these areas were made functional within a week in tents, and now the services are still being provided from tents and in some places through the courtesy of some corporate donors from fully equipped containers.

MALC in the first phase of the relief work provided, tents ration, emergency kits, medicines and medical supplies, blankets, quilts and bed-sets. The second phase is more challenging as the plans are on to provide corrugated tin sheets at a cost of Rs. 30,000 per family for 900 families, economic rehabilitation and continuation of monthly ration for at least 6 months.

The projected budget for the entire relief operation is Rs. 185 million of which Rs 107 million have been received in cash, kind and pledges. The deficit that has to be covered is Rs. 78 million.
